Providing sound craftsmanship in a bespoke and innovative way is at the heart of William Birch. We pride ourselves on delivering great customer service in a traditional style, but above all in showing a passion for everything we do.

Whether we are constructing a new sustainable modern environment or restoring some of the countries most treasured and historic buildings, our quality management systems ensure the highest standard of workmanship and commitment to realising our customer’s aspirations.

Building information modelling (BIM) is an employer's requirement on the Fulford School Expansion project however it has been recently embraced by William Birch & Sons Ltd as we recognise the importance of the technology in our delivery of construction services.
So far on the Fulford School Expansion project BIM has been used for:

  • Spatial management / planning to demonstrate to the client how areas will work
  • Design co-ordination between consultants to ensure elements work together
  • Scheduling of doors and windows
  • Clash detection

Clash detection has proved invaluable on the Fulford School Expansion project classroom block where the fabricators model highlighted a steelwork/window clash some two months earlier then would have been the case under a traditional project.

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental management, we are pleased to announce that William Birch has been accredited BS EN ISO 14001:2015 certification. Following a rigorous audit of our Environmental Management System at the end of 2016 we were delighted to have received zero non-conformances across all areas of the business. We are proud to be amongst some of the top UK businesses who have achieved accreditation to the latest 2015 standard

William Birch has a long history of employing and developing apprentices. The business, in its 5th generation of the Birch family, continue to support and develop opportunities for apprentices in the local area and this latest award for the ‘York Small Employer 2015’ category at the York Apprenticeship Awards is testament to the commitment and investment the business continues to make.

There are now 10 senior managers and professional staff who have come through the apprenticeship route contributing to the ongoing success of the business and around 56% of our workforce and site managers joined the business as apprentices.

Paul Goyea Managing Director said “The company ethos is to develop its own workforce
and ‘upskill’ employees, and it is not only about young apprenticeships, we are proud that we currently have two mature apprentices both in their 50’s, embarking on career changes"

In the last 12 months we have expanded our traditional site trade routes and enrolled
an office based Technical Apprentice (Quantity Surveying) on a new course at York College. We were one of the first companies in York to do this, it has been a great success and we have since been able to offer further opportunities of a similar nature in our expanding Leeds office.
